ENVIRONMENT & PROGRESS
Today’s world needs a new enlightenment. Many ways of thinking date back to a time when the world was empty, humanity was small and nature was immeasurable. The biologist, environmental politician and bestselling author is one of the 100 most influential thinkers in the world.
He was Co-President of the Club of Rome from 2012 to 2018. The list of his awards and titles is impressive: Grand Federal Cross of Merit, German Environmental Award, Theodor Heuss Prize, three honorary doctorates, former Chairman of the Bundestag Environment Committee, Director of the Californian Environmental University. His lectures are exciting, his energy is infectious.

Who is PROF. DR. ERNST ULRICH v. WEIZSÄCKER
Prof. Dr. Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker is a pioneer of sustainable management and has done outstanding persuasive work in politics, business and society over the decades. As a natural scientist, he developed ideas for a sustainable and resource-saving economy long before the current debate on climate change. He presented these concepts in his Factor 4 Report to the Club of Rome.
After studying physics, von Weizsäcker completed his doctorate in biology in 1969. He was appointed Chair of Interdisciplinary Biology at the University of Essen in 1972 and later served as President of the University/Comprehensive University of Kassel. His other professional positions include director of the UN Center for Science and Technology in New York and founding president of the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy.
From 1998 to 2005, von Weizsäcker was a member of the German Bundestag for the SPD and Chairman of the Environment Committee from 2002. In 2005, he was appointed head of the California Environmental University in Santa Barbara. He has been Co-President of the International Resource Panel of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) since 2007 and Co-President of the Club of Rome since 2012, until he was appointed Honorary President in the fall of 2018.
Prof. Dr. Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker has received several awards for his commitment. In 2009, he received the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany from Federal President Horst Köhler. In 2008, he was awarded the German Environmental Prize and in 2011 he received the Theodor Heuss Prize. He has lived with his family in Emmendingen in Breisgau since 2009.
Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker impresses with his extensive knowledge and international experience.
In his presentations, he conveys his messages in calm, forceful words and structures his content very precisely.
WE ARE ON IT! (THE BIG REPORT OF THE CLUB OF ROME)
Come on! What we need to change if we want to stay.
This is what the lecture is about:
“We have enough knowledge to make the necessary changes to preserve the world.”
In its first, globally acclaimed report on the state of humanity (“The Limits to Growth”, 1972), the Club of Rome predicted that the world system would collapse in the next 50 years if no action was taken. The new major report (“It’s our turn”, 2018) offers a radical update. Ernst von Weizsäcker provided the architecture of the book and edited the bold texts of over thirty Club of Rome members. Part 1 of the book diagnoses that today’s trends are anything but sustainable. Part 2 calls for a profound rethink, beyond short-term optimization. Part 3 then invites us on an exciting journey into the future: regenerative economy instead of resource guzzling, climate-neutral energy economy, agriculture with nature instead of against it, ecological urban development and redevelopment, regulation of the financial markets, circular economy, participation of civil society, new benchmarks for success instead of a mere turnover race. And everywhere the necessary policy corrections. The report is written in English (“Come On!”, 2018), but has been translated into Chinese, German, Spanish and Japanese. It’s our turn means: it’s our turn, but if we do badly, then “it’s our turn”!
MORE BALANCE - LESS BOSSINESS
The world needs a new enlightenment!
ENERGY TRANSITION, CLIMATE PROTECTION, CIRCULAR ECONOMY
More prosperity and much less consumption of nature are compatible!
TECHNOLOGY IN THE 21ST CENTURY
There are great opportunities for a recovering environment!
This is what the lecture is about:
The technology of the recovering world will be very different from that of yesterday. First of all, efficiency. Weizsäcker’s book “Factor Five” – written with Australian co-authors – shows how the four major economic sectors of industry, buildings, transportation and agriculture can become five times more efficient in their use of energy, water and raw materials. The required climate neutrality by 2050 suddenly becomes feasible – without any loss of prosperity. Of course, the political framework must be designed in such a way that profits are made with the right things, not the destructive ones. The “passive house” invented in Germany is a prime example: with additional solar energy on the roof, it produces more energy than it consumes. Soils rich in humus make small-scale agriculture a friend of nature and the climate again. And digitalization can help to recover raw materials almost completely. With this strategy, Europe can once again become a world leader in technology. This is how Ursula von der Leyen’s Green New Deal should be understood.
THE FUTURE OF THE WORLD
This is what the lecture is about:
Sustainable energy policy in a crowded world – can our planet still be saved? Yes, if we learn to use energy, raw materials and land efficiently and frugally and finally stabilize the population. This is not possible with the old ways of thinking of overexploitation, avarice, short-term utility and merciless competition. Pope Francis also says something like this.
Today’s world needs nothing less than a new enlightenment. It is not yet too late. Long-term thinking, balance instead of dogmatism, ecologically honest prices are part of it. The new major Club of Rome report edited by Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker entitled “It’s our turn” devotes the central section to this new enlightenment. However, half of the book is then full of political and practical proposals on how to use the new ways of thinking to avoid the great collapse of the world.

Make your event climate-neutral
It’s “dam’n easy” and costs just €1 per tree: climate neutrality for your events means that all CO2 emissions that cannot be avoided or reduced in advance in connection with your event are offset by donated trees.
You can do this with one click via our partner Plant for the Planet. You can then give the donated trees to your guests as PR-effective tree vouchers. Under the motto: Do good and talk about it. The founder of this organization, our fine-selection-of-speaker Felix Finkbeiner, also gives sensational lectures! And there is a donation receipt for you… Please feel free to call us or write to us.
